Lausanne, Switzerland, May 26, 2004…. As temperatures soar in Europe, some drivers will be getting hot under the collar at the Mediterranean Grand Prix in Cagliari, Sardinia May 29-30, 2004.

Racing to bridge the gap behind world championship points leader Francesco Cantando, Scott Gillman of the Emirates team will be pulling out all stops for a another win after his spectacular victory at the Grand Prix of Portugal . Having won this race in 2000, Gillman is hoping his current winning streak will continue and he’ll manage to close the 10 point difference between them.

Four time winner in Cagliari and current eight times world champion, Guido Cappellini would normally be feeling quite comfortable at this point as he prepares to arrive in Sardinia.  With an unfortunate run of bad luck, he is however struggling with a variety of engine and boat issues which have left him without a win for eight races straight – pressure will be mounting in the Tamoil camp.

Still recovering from his dramatic crash in Portugal, Pierre Lundin from the Rainbow Corona team is currently nursing neck problems and won’t be racing in Cagliari. “Naturally I’m disappointed not to be driving this time, however I need to completely rest and recuperate,” commented Lundin. Added teammate Fabrizio Bocca, “We’ll certainly miss Pierre, however we wish him a speedy recovery.” 

This is the fourth round of the UIM F1 Powerboat Championship and the City of Cagliari is pleased to welcome the race back to Sardinia.  The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia boasts more than 900 miles of spectacular jagged and rocky coastline.  Tourist and residents will be in for a treat as drivers rev up their engines and race at speeds of up to 200kph for the chance of a podium finish.

Following the Grand Prix of Portugal, World Championship points currently stand with Francesco Cantando in first position with 50 points, Scott Gillman in second with 40 points, Guido Cappellini, third with 33 points, Sami Selio, fourth with 21 points and Laith Pharaon, fifth with 20 points.
